Regarding the hover effect with the footer images, if you use an SVG you can use CSS to make it change color when you hover it. The images would look crisper since they're dynamically generated for whatever screen resolution loading them.
I agree, we should switch to this technique.

Right now they are pngs
This is mostly regarding the logo and the footer images
not sure if this will be friendly with the hover effect w/ sprite image @K-law is thinking about implementing.
But it still would be nice to use a vector image for the logo
