common: remove the quotation marks form version defines

libvncclient: add functionality to abort while waiting for connection

I did not yet have time to look into this, too much €-work atm, sorry.

@ObeJoh I cherry-picked of this PR what I found good to go, the other commits have still open questions or other issues (which I marked here). Feel free to file a new, updated PR, I'm tentatively closing this one.
