sketchup ".skp" sources for models? (sub-optimal source-format) #52

It'd be nice if a more... accessible source format was used for model
sources, or, at least, a copy of the data in a more standard format, such
as .obj, .blend, etc. "*.skp" can only be opened in "Google Sketchup", and
is locked for use in that program, unless the user buys the professional
version. Only earlier versions of sketchup can export a format that can be
imported into other modeling programs, such as blender. Blender, with the
old version could be used to convert to others, should the user wish. But,
the current version of sketchup changed the format specs, and, thus, there
is no way without the professional version of google sketchup to utilise
the model sources. This causes difficulties for contributors, as well as
effectively creates a similar to the "Java Trap" of old.

Hopefully there is some work around to this.

We store models in whatever format the artist created the model in. When an
artist
uses Sketchup, then we store it as a skp file. skp files contain COLLADA (dae)
files
which can be loaded with most programs.
