Api 26 introduced adaptive icons where background and foreground are two different images. https://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/icon_design_adaptive.html

I'm not sure what the best way to do this is, since Red Moon's icon wouldn't make sense as shapes other than a circle. I don't think anything gets smaller than a circle, so is there any benefit to doing this?

Well, I just remeber that I read a discussion here if Api 26+ should be supported, but I didn't find the issue. If you don't support it, you don't really need an adaptive icon.

Something like this could be the background (the red circle being the moon): moon
