The syntax is described at https://bookdown.org/yihui/bookdown/cross-references.html but as you can see, if you change the title of the section/sub-section you are linking to, it breaks the link. So if are using cross references, you need to remember to check any possible broken links whenever you change the title of a section/subsection.
