I like the (# Kites | # Comments) that appears under usernames, but I think it's best left to follows and likes, which are events that don't repeat.
For comments, I'd bold the username and place it next to the date...or before the text, like FB does. Minimize vertical spacing.
There doesn't appear to be a distinction between replies and new comments; that seems like the right choice, especially in a narrow sidebar. It makes a reply button unnecessary; we just need a field to type in. The @ addressing method used in FB comments is nice.
