As with most software projects, what we originally set out to do does not always match in how people use it. As such, we are constantly re-evaluating what's important to us and what's important to you!
It's clear that there is a wide breadth of features that could be added to the configurator, and we are always looking for feedback on what you would like to see. However, we're also aware that LocalDeck has proved useful for people with a wide range of needs and abilities.
We are currently focusing on the following areas of improvement:
Improving the configurator's usability
Allowing for more complex configurations without making it harder to use
Ensuring that the configurator is as stable as possible
With that in mind, we are currently planning the following features & improvements:
Make BLE Sensors an opt-in feature rather than the default
BLE requires the ESP32 to use power-saving mode, this has caused issues for more users than it has helped.
We will be adding a "BLE" toggle to the configurator, which will allow you to enable/disable BLE support
Splitting the config into multiple files
The configurator's output is currently a single file, which is getting quite large
ESPHome can split its configuration into multiple files, and we will be adding this feature to the configurator
This will allow us to place the configurator-managed file into its own folder and direct users to a shim file that will have the commonly changed settings (like WiFi credentials)
This will also allow us to document adding custom configuration to the output, by way of packages !extend
