Improving GT (Google Translate) automatic translation is not as straightforward as it seemed at first.
A lot of back and forth to find what works!
And I only focused on the French translation!
The main drawback of GT, is that it may not always provide accurate translations, especially for complex or context-dependent content. It can struggle with idiomatic expressions, nuanced meanings, or technical terminology.
When GT does not provide an accurate translation for a sentence, we need to improve its understandability.
Unfortunately, improving automatic translation requires making compromises between an idiomatic and complex sentence composed of several sections/folds/ideas tucked together and a translatable sentence.
🤔 Kathie's Tidepool page is a typical example of this dilemma. The content of this page is top-notch, informative, and well-written. However, I feel like trying to improve GT automatic translation degrades a bit the original.
ℹ️ One way to improve the automatic translation of a sentence (not accurately translated) is to:
- Provide more context (Context is key compared to all the other tricks)
- split a long sentence into several short ones
- rewrite a complex sentence into (one or more) simpler ones
- Mark a word/text not to be translated as such
