Attachments in e-mail can be any format, contain password protection or other issues. This is not visible and therefore hard to manage.

First thought would be to identify the attached file formats, which should give a better indication on the risk involved. Maybe go from there with validation tools.

Not specifically on email attachments but we use FITS/C3PO at the National archives of the Netherlands to search for the 'security flag' on a couple of file formats that indicate 'protection' such as passwords.
