Benjee10 outlined an idea here and here that would allow lab(s) to process low-value materials into high-value materials and thereby provide a late-game LKO alternative to contracts. The idea is currently partially implemented but not fully developed or balanced.

I intend to expand upon this concept in a way that is balanced against stock mining profitability. Currently the ISRU unit can generate 240 funds of revenue per ton of ore by converting it to monopropellant. I don't see much evidence that this is an especially popular way to make money, so we will need to improve upon this figure. This will be balanced by requiring a more complex and massive supply chain, requiring all of the HabTech labs working together to generate ideal profits.

With this setup, a shipment of e.g. 30 tons of Ore would generate revenues of 60,000 funds over the course of a couple of hours' processing, which is on par with LKO contracts.
