Add introduction text and citations #9

Added some writing to the introduction and separated the beginning into (i) introduction and (ii) notation/GPS sections. Lucy, I'm not sure what your vision is for the final product, so feel free to reject or edit over any changes.

As a side note, I couldn't render the document anymore after my last pull, but it might just be an issue on my end.

Could add them to the README if that's helpful

Lucy had a particular issue I can't replicate in #7 as well. We could switch back to data frames if that's the issue

No I didn't follow those fully. That's probably it - will try next weekend, in the midst of some travel this week. Thanks!
