Now that Gamescope supports explicit sync (it used to only support implicit sync, something the proprietary NVIDIA driver never supported)., embedded Gamescope ("Game Mode") should work.

Even the open source NVK driver should have full Gamescope support soon, too.

I believe NVIDIA 550 is the minimum version required for this to work.
