Take inspiration from popular open-source projects to improve the documentation website

It's better to steal well than to invent badly, so let's consider what other projects have done well. There's a plethora of popular ones to check out, but my initial surveys suggest most of them share a small set of common features.

I think that's quite enough, since most of them are very similar. This might indicate that my first draft of a redesign (with download buttons and short summary/getting started link) isn't too far off.
