Immersive home space field trip #10

There is a growing ecosystem of immersive "home space" applications that make sense in XR:

Some of these aren't apps in their own right; they are a foundational layer of the platform, such as SteamVR Home. However they all have user-generated content and significant social elements, and they are some of the most "interoperable" tools around.

It would be great to hop through a shortlist of these apps in full XR immersion, to the extent they allow us to huddle in the same room/virtual space. Visiting the community UGC homes would be a great way to consider the tools for crafting spaces, the distribution mechanisms available, how the content blends together in the metaverse and -- of course -- shine some light on some amazing content that gets made in what might not be considered a traditional "game".

Accessibility

Our M3 meetups and field trips have generally had strong accessibility: desktop users could join.

However, most of these experiences are VR-only, so we might have to do more in-depth setup for participants (particularly software installation), as well as set up an interface for a desktop audience, such as a stream or voicechat.

Previously SM Sith Lord has helped us out by streaming from Anarchy Arcade.

If we do field trips on a weekly basis or so then this could slot into a weekend or any other time we're all available to go into VR.

To keep things AAA I would suggest truncating the list after Teleporter.

Also, I think SteamVR Home, Oculus Home, and AArcade are really the only "home space" apps in the list. So I think a more appropriate name would best fit this field trip.

BigScreenVR is a "desktop viewing" application - similar to VirtualDesktop or the SteamVR Desktop Theater. Yes, it has recently pivoted to include a 1st party virtual movie theater social hub, but I believe its main purpose is still its peer-to-peer encrypted screen sharing user-created servers. BigScreen is not focused on world building features.

While the Home apps do also have desktop viewing functionality (as well as all VR Dashes do now days too), they are much more focused on launching standalone shortcuts & spatially organizing those shortcuts in the virtual world - just as we spatially organize our shortcuts on our 2D desktop wallpapers. The home apps are also very focused on world building features.

Sansar, AltspaceVR, and Teleporter are social apps - like 3D chat rooms w/ mini-games embedded. They are not about launching standalone shortcuts nor organizing shortcuts into the virtual world. Nor are they about viewing your desktop on an in-world screen. They are much more focused on the world building (save for Teleporter) & social aspects.

All of the apps have a similar type of social aspect available. They are all multiplayer compatible. Many have some type of embedded mini-games or dynamic screen viewing. Most are about world building - usually via spawning objects into the spaces around you. However, they each approach these common features with different functionality / purpose in mind.
