Accoridngly to e.g. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/csec-used-airport-wi-fi-to-track-canadian-travellers-edward-snowden-documents-1.2517881 there is the possibility of tracking users based on their WIFI usage ( I guess it all points the end to the MAC address) in (semi-) public WiFis. First of all: Generally, is there the possibility of faking the MAC address such that the Access Point really sees a different MAC?
There are some approaches to really fake the MAC adress for this, but most of them are not working for all devices, see e.g. https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/17657/how-to-change-the-permanent-mac-address-on-my-android-phone
