Remove PThread dependency #298

Remove the unnecessary pthread dependency.
Upgrade actions/checkout to v3 to silence a harmless CI warning about an old Node version.

I try to fix some waning on the visual studio build of the test demos. I can only address they ones on the Newton side. so I did that. but I broke something in the linux build. I can fix it now, but I will do it tonight.

after I do that, I will post here my finding. for now the Linux test build will fail.
