Survey Data: Connectivity Visualizations

Draft, review, and embed Tableau visualizations that highlights key reliability questions from the survey data. Checkboxes represent key bullet points to highlight in the report. Check complete when data is represented in visual.

Internet Subscriptions

• [x] PCT Have an internet subscription (12% of survey respondents do not have an internet subscription.)
• [x] Reason why No Internet subscription (Those who do not have internet access cite affordability as the reason why they don’t have internet.)
• [x] Who is Current Internet Provider (The majority of survey respondents in the three cities are Comcast subscribers. 80% of respondents used Comcast. In Revere and Everett that number was between 63 and 67%, with an average of 20% of respondents using RCN as an available competitor. In Revere and Everett where RCN is an available competitor to Comcast, those communities had about 20% of users subscribing to an alternative to Comcast. Indicating that where there is more choice in service providers, individuals will adopt. )
• [x] Technology relied on for Internet (6% rely only on a WiFi hotspot. About 8% of respondents in all communities rely on T Mobile or MetroPCS Hotspot mobile subscriptions. In all three communities, about 6% of respondents were still using Verizon DSL services. Chelsea had the highest number of T-Mobile or MetroPCS wireless service subscriptions as the primary form of internet service. Wireless ISP providers like Starry and NetBlazer are available in all three communities, but have had limited market penetration, with only 1% of survey respondents using that service.)

Affordability

• [x] Agree/Disagreed with my internet is affordable (Overall, only 50% of respondents agreed with the statement “My internet is affordable”. Those respondents who disagreed with the statement my internet is affordable (45% of all respondents), that number jumps to 45% indicating they always or frequently have issues with dropped video calls, potentially indicating that they are unable to pay for the speed package needed to serve their household. Subscribers to RCN were slightly more likely to indicate that their internet was affordable – 60% as compared to 50% of Comcast subscribers. This may indicate that competition. While a smaller sample pool, 75% of respondents using Starry indicate that their internet is affordable. Bundling of cable TV services from Comcast and RCN may have effect on perception.)
• [x] Take action on Cost- (70% of survey respondents have had to change or cancel their internet subscription because it was too expensive).
• [x] Leave their home to use internet at another location (37% of survey respondents have had to leave their home to use internet at another location because internet at their home is unreliable)

Reliability

• [x] Frequently have issues with dropped or choppy video calls. (32% of survey respondents indicate that they always or frequently have issues with dropped or choppy video calls. This correlates closely with the ~30% of speed tests below 25mbps download. Those respondents who disagreed with the statement my internet is affordable (45% of all respondents), that number jumps to 45% indicating they always or frequently have issues with dropped video calls, potentially indicating that they are unable to pay for the speed package needed to serve their household.)
• [x] Need to leave home for service - 37% of survey respondents have had to leave their home to use internet at another location because internet at their home is unreliable.
• [x] # people needed to use the internet at home - (Respondents who indicated that three or more people needed to use the internet at any given time for work or education were more likely to experience choppy or dropped video calls. @EllaBrady @jeichen101 I have combined these Connectivity visuals from multiple GitHub issues into this one issue and created separate ones for Device and Literacy.

While there are currently 5 visuals created in Tableau for this section (see screenshots below). There are a number of points in the outline that are not represented in visuals. Such as: displaying the data behind the reason why no internet or breakdown of Wi-Fi hotspot or number of individuals in households by experience choppy video (current draft viz in the report). I think it is fine if we choose to just provide this data in text and not visual, but @jeichen101 can you review and confirm by checking off the checkboxes in this issue that the points that need visuals have corresponding visuals?

@theryankelly @EllaBrady Thanks for flagging this. I wrote that narrative out and only created visuals for the points I felt like really needed them. However, I don't think it would hurt to add a visualization from Tableau to accompany the point - I still think I need to see how it would look in the website form to fully understand if it's needed or not. If not, then perhaps the viz's not used end up in the appendix?

@jeichen101 @theryankelly I can add these visuals do draft stories in Tableau and they can be added to the appendix if they do not work in the report? Now that I have opened the issue and can see it outlined out by visual, I understand where the gaps are.

@theryankelly @jeichen101 As of now, all of the visuals mentioned are shown in the Connection story. For the "If no, why not?" ---this is also a matrix question. I cleaned the data and currently have 5 responses excluded that selected multiple answers to this question. In order to provide more accuracy, there may be a better way to go about this.

@trust-kimberly to reduce width I did not find a quick way to remove the axis title without moving labels. So I shortened it to help it fit when embeded.

@EllaBrady I was drafting in Digital Access Survey Draft _ 2, when you are ready with new version, let me know and we can move to DS account.
