QoL changes to make model functions more usable #1

I have made some edits to the _create_modelmaps.py and _read_modelmaps.py (see commits) that were useful in my personal workflow. I thought these may be useful patches that you may want to implement so thought I would send them your way.

P.S. Apologies if I have used git wrong, I am just getting into how to use it.

I fixed two small bugs I found with your additions, but they have been merged to master and pushed to pypi.
