I played around with the current theme and came to like it... it's clean and simple and it displays nicely on my old phone so I am resigned to keep the Hyde theme for the immediate future. With recent edits, it also works reasonably well as a portal.
If anyone else wants to play with it, please do reopen this issue.

The www.mdanalysis.org home page is currently styled with the Hyde theme for Jekyll. It is very minimalist (although it gets the basics done). Maybe we want something a bit more welcoming?
I had a look at http://jekyllthemes.org/ and I thought Feeling Responsive looked interesting with a lot of flexibility.

It would be nice to have blogging capability but the start page should be static and a blog could be hidden behind a menu for those who care.
We want to have a few static pages but most of the real content lives elsewhere anyway and so the primary purpose is that of a portal.
