Also wanted to state the my Xoom is on Honeycomb 3.2 and the Android phone is a
rooted LG Optimus M (2.2.2) MetroPCS.
I have not tried (as I was looking thru the posts, which I should have done
first) to ENABLE wi-fi encryption for the Xoom to see it.
My Xoom is NOT rooted (how would I root it and why? It's ok as is except no
miniSD support).
The LG Esteem from MetroPCS is basically a LG Revolution (Verizon) with less
internal memory (4GB vs 8GB) except with 2.3.4 on it SW Version MS910ZVB.

Just started tether as my phone was in 3G NOT 4G. This is using someone else's
equipment on the same tower instead of going thru MetroPCS equipment.
I could NOT load any pages from my Macbook Pro connected thru Airport to my
Esteem.
I do have 3G (vs 1x) because being a rooted phone, I forced the PRL 3025
(instead of the 3019 that comes from dialing *228 and asking for updated
roaming list). The phone will switch between 4gLTE/EVDO/1x depending on signals
available. I had not noticed this when I want to try the tether again a few
minutes after making this post. So this is because of going thru someone else's
equipment (on 3G) that the roaming data MAY be stopped (but talk/text will
work). I don't think this is a problem with the .apk except maybe the screen
should tell (in a large font) what speed you are connected at (next to the wifi
pulsing icon). For those who do not know or don't get it (on MetroPCS) that the
roaming is thru Sprint towers/equipment and also Verizon's tower/equipment so
we have "nationwide" roaming and roaming data (either on the phone or thru
tethering) may NOT be allowed when roaming. This is my 'educated' theory as to
why it quit just now. But back on 4G it went right thru.
