I have this same error occurring now. It first happened a month ago
mid-tether. I had been connected (Motorola Photon fully updated OTA and
rooted) for about 2 hours (3.1beta7) and at the top left corner of the photon a
red shield with an "X" in it appeared. It made the same noise as a connection
would and when you swipe the notification bar down, it says "(X) Superman
connected (some numbers)" but I cannot click anywhere to see what kind of error
I am getting. I subsequently upgraded to 3.1beta8 and now 3.1beta9 with no
change. I have tried various options and combinations of check boxes but to no
avail.
On the computer, (Lenovo laptop, 64 bit, Windows 7 fully updated and previously
connected consistently) it shows the ad hoc connection (no encryption) and I
can connect but it immediately goes to connected but with a yellow exclamation
point in the wifi icon in the windows task bar. More details show that I am
getting the IP address from the tethered connection from the phone but it says
that I do not have an internet connection.
I am more than happy to provide more details to help solve the problem or
provide more information for a device profile. thanks again for all you do.

I was able to regain the tether by formatting the phone and reinstalling. It
currently works on my photon and my wife's as well.
I installed 3.1-beta11
Settings:
Device-Profile: Auto
WiFi Encryption works enabled or disabled
All other settings left as default
I hope that helps.

Problem solved by going into wifi tether setting and changing setup method to
WEXT (AD HOC).
