No more than two devices can connect

Which device (manufacturer, type)?
HTC Evo
Which firmware is installed?
2.1 update 1
What version of wireless tether are you using?
2.0.5-pre2
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.turn on tethering
2.connect device 1 and 2
3. try and connect device 3

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
All devices should connect. Everything appears fine, 2 devices are connected, 
the third device (laptop or mobile) is told "unable to connect" -- this is with 
both access control on and off

Please provide any additional information below.
