3.0-pre10 and 11 dies and crashes phone intermittantly #894

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Using a Samsung Epic, 3.0-pre11 dies intermittently and causes phone to crash.
The symptom does not seem to occur during any particular action, but seems to
happen more frequently if there are text messages or phone calls in progress.
The phone will vibrate two short buzzes with an alert that some computer has
joined the network and that Wifi Tether has requested root permissions. The
phone will operate normally for about 10-20 seconds following that, freeze, and
then power off.

Once the phone is turned back on and wifi tether is restarted, it may or may
not reproduce the error. Usually what ever computer tried to rejoin the phone
will show as immediately joining (even though the computer does not indicate
that it did).

Configuration is using Samsung Epic 4G Device-Profile, Softap for Samsung
(master), Wifi-Encryption enabled, Channel 1, Custom SSID, Access-Control
enabled, LAN set in the 10 subnet space, Wake-Lock is disabled.

I have this issue as well. When I had Android 2.1 and 2.x wifi tether, this
was not a problem.

This is a known issue and I was not able to fix it so far. (I don't own such a
device and can't reproduce it).

Use version 2 of the app in the meantime - this is adhoc-only but has not the
desribed issue (as far as I know).

Be all means, I'm somewhat Linux savvy and would be happy to capture any logs
or diagnostics that you would like so that I can aid in debugging it. Just let
me know what you need.

I see this same issue in 3.0pre12. And when it does connect speeds seem to be
very slow.

I am also having this problem on my Epic 4g. Almost the same configuration as
the first described above. I will experiment with the settings and see if I can
keep it from happening. Someone in SDK/XDA forums mentioned that you should
start the tether with 4g turned off and then turn it on later. This wasn't
happening to me until I turned on the 4g connection; 3g/1x worked fine. Screws
the phone up so bad that when it reboots I get UID warning and have to format
my /data and flash back to a backup.

Try this experimental version:
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_0-test2-softap.ap
k
(Uninstall old versions first.)

This seems to work ...

I can attest that wifi_tether_v3_0-test2-softap.apk works correctly on my Epic,
stable so far after a few on/off cycles and client connections. Works over 4G,
haven't tested 3G.

1. Uninstalled old binaries
2. Installed new binaries
3. Ran application and reconfigured using following:
- my old SSID, Passphrase, hide SSID, SoftAP Master, Samsung Epic
4. Started, stopped, and restarted the services (worked, usually would fail in
older versions)
5. Tried to connect, failed to connect to Internet (unable to resolve IP)
6. Rebooted and restarted app
7. Tried to connect, Same results as number 5.

Also, I noticed that the access list is gone from this version. I also noticed
that the ability to choose a subnet for IP's is also missing from the settings
menu (precludes me from setting static IP's to test if Nat'ing is still working
ok regardless of DHCP.)

More playing around with it, tried to set the profiles back to Auto while it
was running, the dialog for restarting came up and it locked up the phone,
needed to remove battery. Task manager didn't show wifi-tether as even running.

Restarted phone and application, checked log and noticed there was only 6
entries:
- stopping driver
- Wifi Firmware
- starting driver
- config softap
- starting softap
- tethering now running.

Anything else you'd like me to try, I'll be happy to.

Thank you.

Hey guys - I appreciate all of the hard work on this. I have an Epic running
Froyo and have tried everything I can think of to get this working
(uninstall/reinstall all versions of WT, factory reset phone back to 2.1, then
OTA to 2.2 Froyo, even re-formatted the SD card after a reset in case there was
some bad data gumming things up on the card).
I am rooted w/ Superuser access.
My problem - I load and can get WT working one time only. After that, it just
freezes while trying to open or close. And when I try to re-install binaries,
it says that it "couldn't install file". The only resolution is to uninstall,
restart, reinstall, and even then it is a 50/50 chance of working.
I have a WiFi only Xoom (which unfortunately mandates infrastructure mode) and
the Wireless Tether will be awesome - I appreciate all the work that goes into
this - it is not unnoticed. Thanks again!

And Harald - I have tried uninstalling the 3.0pre14 Experimental, reboot, and
then downloading/installing the newest experimental version
(http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_0-test2-softap.a
pk), and it didn't work either. Thanks!

Hello. I recently posted bug 977 as seen here
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=977&sort=-id

Someone emailed me this link so I tried
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_0-test2-softap.ap
k and although it can stop and start multiple times without an error message I
am unable to receive an address from DHCP.

I am having the crashing issue too. My Epic crahes while the tethering is
started. As soon as I get the notice about the hotspot starting my phone
freezes and reboots.

I also uninstalled pre14 and tried
thehttp://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_0-test2-softap
.apk, but it didn't work at all. I truly need the infrastructure mode, our I
would simply go back to my wireless tether program which never had any issues.

Exact same issue:
 1) Random phone shutdowns when Wifi-Tether is running
 2) After shutting down the program, the phone must be shut down and restarted before Wifi-Tether will start again.

Same issue here using pre14... 30-90minutes in infrastructure mode and the
phone crashes down to the battery charging screen (powers off completely)

Sprint Epic 4G
Android 2.2.1 EC05 (OneClickRootCWM3.0.2.5-EC05)

no other kernel/root hacks, done immediately after a clean ODIN push of the
OFFICIAL 2.1 and OTA to 2.2.1-EC05... so there should be no hairy mods/hacks
getting in the way

Well. I have no idea what's going on and what causes those
reboots/instabilities. I recommend NOT to use infrastructure-mode and use adhoc
instead.

Hoping that it can get fixed so that infrastructure mode is stable :P lol

One thing I have noticed... in infrastructure mode, the Sprint Hotspot icon
pops up along with Wifi Tether's icon in the notification bar. This seems odd,
like Sprint Hotspot is being piggybacked or the phone thinks you're trying to
launch it or something. The thing is, I can't even find mobileap.apk on my
phone, so I'm not sure where it's launching from. I was hoping to rename it to
prevent it from running as a way of testing to see if its causing a conflict
that results in this crash.

Harald,

I would be happy to help debug if you'd like. My time is limited, but I can
take a crack at it if you'd like. Can you contact me offline to see what I can
do to help?

Thank you.

In response to random reboots:
Make sure your phone is not too hot. I happened to be icing my knee one day and
set my phone on it without realizing it. I did, however, notice that I had been
tethered for over 5 hours and the phone had not rebooted or shut down once (it
usually happens about every hour or so). I have no idea if this is actually a
fix, I haven't really had to tether for a long time since then. And obviously,
it should go without saying that if you try this, use a freeze-gel icepack and
not just ice cubes in a ziplock or your phone will get wet from the
condensation.

Just to try and help a little, I'm including logs from logcat if it helps a
little I edited MAC and phone numbers to protect the innocent, but this is the
last 217 lines of log cat before the phone dies. This was while running Stock
EC05 rooted with WifiTether 3.1beta2. Phone rebooted into a normal state and
was able to restart wifi tether. Hope this helps.

While it's not the most perfect solution, I think I found a solution to this
issue. Buy a different phone. Since my contract was up and I was able to get a
discount on a new phone, and since my Epic died for the third time, I decided
to move to a different phone.

The Motorola Photon works very well and while it shows the same reloading
effect in this bug report that caused the Epic to crash, the Photon didn't. It
simply reloaded the wifi driver and pressed on. The difference I noticed is
that the wifi is in Ad-Hoc only, there is no access control list, and when that
reload issue occurs, your clients that don't auto-associate with an ad-hoc
network are dropped.

Power levels, encryption, and the other settings to my knowledge all worked as
designed.
