Config menu's 'Audio Amplifier' setting isn't working #735

Hojo reported that he finds it difficult to hear audio from the MEGA65 as he uses hearing aids and the volume levels are quite low.

He has tried using the "Audio Amplifier Off/On" setting in the config menu, but it doesn't seem to be working, the same audio level is heard on the 3.5mm audio jack.

I've given it a try now with a fairly recent development core, and I also experience the same thing.

Also, Hojo's believes that the setting may have instead been intended for the internally installable speakers, which he has also installed but has not been able to get working?

Test Environment (required)

To Reproduce

  1. Go to config menu, 'Audio' page and turn 'AUDIO AMPLIFIER' setting either on or off
  2. Save settings and in return to BASIC
  3. Assure you have audio speakers connected to the 3.5mm audio jack (and mute any audio from your hdmi tv speakers)
  4. type PLAY EDC and assess the volume level you hear
  5. go back to step 1 and toggle this setting, repeat the steps and re-assess the volume level you hear for the PLAY command again

Expected behavior The hope would be that the audio should sound louder when 'AUDIO AMPLIFIER' is set on, and audio should sound software when it is set to off.

Did some initial sniffing around, and can confirm Hojo's understanding that this 'AUDIO AMPLIFIER' setting relates solely to the optional internal speakers (not related to 3.5mm audio jack or hdmi audio). That journey was in this discord thread:

Given that, perhaps this ticket should then focus on why this setting did not work for Hojo. I believe he said he did install the internal speakers but did not have any success with them, regardless of this setting.
