When RENUMBER encounters a BASIC statement that refers to a line number that doesn't exist, it aborts the renumber and issues an UNRESOLVED REFERENCE ERROR. However, it offers no assistance in finding this error.
Describe the solution you'd like
RENUMBER should set the appropriate system variables to refer to the line that triggered this error. The HELP command should display the offending line.
Describe alternatives you've considered
Alternatively, RENUMBER could print this error information directly. But there's already a facility for finding errors in BASIC lines that should suffice for this case.
Without a change, programmers have to hunt for this manually, or resort to using other tools.
