So they are self-descriptive (e.g. "Quality Assurance Cell" instead of "QA_Cell"). Would require modifying current annotations (by @kdaily) but @markdane would need to adjust future code to use the new names as well.
This is a carryover of legacy ways of annotating we came up with in Synapse - to use shortened names. There's really no reason to, and we've moved towards using full text names so they don't have to be described as much.
