These names are sometimes abbreviated but will be familiar to someone with some domain knowledge, e.g. PACU is the post anesthesia care unit. Some of them might be BIDMC specific mixes though. The source of this information is a hospital maintained lookup which maps a physical ward location to an intended service. We don't do any cleaning on this service name but if you make a list of the ambiguous terms we could add explanation to the documentation for the table.
Could you tell us more about what the care unit types are, please? For example, what does a "Medicine" care unit mean? Other names are just as confusing: PACU, Med/Surg/GYN, Observation, Nursery - Well Babies. Also, what does it mean when the care unit type is empty?
Thank you!
