Database backed data

I think we'll hit a point real soon where making a commit to the repo to push new data becomes problematic.

This would require more complex application code (authentication, authorization, web based project editor). However, I think for this to move beyond proof of concept this should be seriously considered.

i have some questions about where the data lives, too, and how it might be refreshed/updated.
