Fix the python part threading changes. #3

ooo, thanks for looking at this. I spent a lot more time making the C/C++ code work than looking at the python hooks.

I've got similar stuff I worked up while traveling the past few days. My changes also clean up a bunch of warnings when building with things other than gcc. ;) I'll try and get those in the tree when I return.
