This PR removes the string conversion issue mentioned in #111

It looks plausible... and the number of lines of code shrinks! I've never studied the parser, so I can't say if its good or bad, but if it works and passes tests, then go for it. (I have no plans to retest/remeasure this code anytime soon ...(
