This reverts commit 3c0499856717581b44835b2c56fbeb1109050e91, reversing changes made to 1ed8b4f71e6bef573331d9929c1dedfd5518e17f. It reverts the revert, keeping the commit history intact. So in effect it re-introduces the changes in #213 and #214 back into main, undoing (reverting) #216 which had itself reverted those changes. This is messy but also safe.
