Provide compatibility for recent PuTTY development snapshots? #30

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
The 0.60 version of PuTTY that puttycyg is currently based on was released
on 2007-04-29, and is over 2.5 years old. I am unaware of any plans around
PuTTY's release schedule (nothing found on the official web site,
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ ), but have found that
numerous fixes have since been made to the SVN repository (
http://svn.tartarus.org/sgt/putty/ ), including a lot of activity over the
past few months.

The puttycyg patches do not currently apply cleanly to the latest PuTTY
development snapshots. Ideally, a new official PuTTY version would be
released, which a new puttycyg version could then be based on. However, in
the meantime, could a "best effort" be made to provide compatibility with
the latest snapshots in the puttycyg patch, even if no puttycyg binaries
are released? This would also minimize the effort required once a new
PuTTY version is officially released.

Thanks!

Are you volunteering to create a branch of PuTTYcyg's SVN repository which
parallels
the PuTTY development branch?

Unfortunately, I don't I have the time to commit to that. Though I wonder if
there
is an easier way to handle this than maintaining a repository copy?

If this was distributed version control, it would be easier. It does seem
handy that both
PuTTY and PuTTYcyg use Subversion, but that doesn't actually help.

When PuTTY 0.61 is released, I will update PuTTYcyg, merging the changes in one
shot.
Until then, it's more work for me to try to stay in sync with the devel PuTTY
branch.

If someone wants to maintain such a branch here, I'm not opposed.

FYI, PuTTY 0.61 is now released. I'm looking forward to an updating puttycyg
so I don't need to keep using 2 different executables for different purposes.
Thanks!!
