It's less of a bug and more of a missing feature. The manual specifies strains are only output for 2D and 3D elements (see pages 4 and 41). So it's not that they're not output -- they're not even computed.
Definitely an oversight in the code. At least we can just copy the 1d stress code and pull out the material part. Ideally stress and strain are linked so you don’t need to compute the strain twice.
