Currently, someone in protection IV diamond armor takes only 36% of the magic damage dealt to them. Meanwhile, some using power armor takes 100% of the damage. For instance, a full-power Mana and Artifice spell will take three hits to kill the first person, but only one hit to kill the second. Additionally, if the person with diamond armor uses Astral Sorcery, they can use protection V to further reduce incoming magic damage down to 20%.
My idea is to give 2 sources of magic resistance. First, a gold plating upgrade that reduces incoming magic damage by 25%. Second, have the energy shield also reduce magic damage by 25%. Gold plating would either be separate from and compatible with the other armor upgrades, or its own armor upgrade with some physical protection built in (less than iron).
Other Possible Solutions:
-An anti-magic barrier that reduces all magic damage by 50% (or have it built into the energy shield).
-Gold plating that reduces magic damage by 50%.
-Have the energy shield instead apply the protection enchantment, since with the armor changes in 1.9 having 24 armor is no longer anywhere near being equal to 20 armor + protection 4. This would not only solve being too weak to magic, but would also put it on par with normal armor again defense-wise (assuming it would become compatible with plating). To prevent it from being too strong, the maximum damage resistance it provides could be reduced from 64 to 50%.
The solutions I came up with is made with still being weak to magic in mind, just not as weak.
