Notes on explaining what's the japanese stuff #2

Open Magneticdud opened 6 years ago

Does it need to explain what's "bonito flakes" or other japanese foods that are impossible to find overseas, hence unknown to people?

For example: 93e24c7d436de51ee212390bf8b7a26b16139265

The description of what's the food, is not crucial to the story, and fast subs are hard to read without pausing

For example, on the sub there is:

you are the "Mayuge Neko", so it's important you have the "mayuge" (Note: mayuge means eyebrow, neko means cat)

In order to avoid something like this: immagine

It's better to just write:

you are the "eyebrow cat", so it's important you have the eyebrow

Fuck, just noticed that the "mayuge neko" was part of a pun 20 episodes later

In episode 54, the announcer said "you won't listen to the maneki neko (the traditional lucky cat, for a japanese folk music group), but the mayuge neko."

What did you end up deciding to do? I thought about it but decided the pun was also too hard to explain since viewers likely won't know what the traditional lucky cat is either...

I wrote like this:

Next up on stage is not "Maneki Neko",

and then on the following row:

(it's the traditional porcelain lucky cat)

i guess can be understood, it's pretty famous
