Super, super weird.
I suppose it's possible this is a fixable issue, but I have no idea how to diagnose it. I would be looking for exceptions in the debug log leading up to the issue, but I don't see anything in the KSP.log file (which is less verbose). I don't even know what plugin code runs in the R&D screen, if any. It's possible this is caused by the models, textures or part configuration.
If you can reliably reproduce the issue (which seems to be the case) I suggest you try the following:
The easiest fix is probably to manually unlock the parts in the persistence file, but I understand the allure of a challenging bug!
Well, I can no longer reproduce the problem, and I suspect that either 1: the texture or config file for that part could not be correctly read from disk without corruption, or 2: it was really just coincidence.
I downloaded KSP 0.32 and kethane 0.8.2 again, and compared the checksums with my originals. These were the same. I unzipped them, before permanently deleting the other copies just to ensure they would not end up written to the same physical disk location. I have not experienced the problem since, and have tried to reproduce it twice. Disk utility did not report any problems with the disk... Go figure.
Again, sorry to clutter up your bug tracker with this.
I'd like to report a bug, but it's just too bizarre to be real. Unlocking kethane parts in the science center causes kernel panics! Yes, that's the situation where the entire computer freezes, the audio buzzes and the screen turns black. The machine is completely unresponsive and must be powered down by a hard reset. At first, obviously I would think it's a coincidence related to heat or something, but it's happened five times!
First time, I had KSP 0.23, and kethane 0.8.2. I bought a few techs (including one with the kethane scanner) and then hovered over the tech with the kethane tank and had a kernel panic.
Second time, I loaded KSP again, and attempted to buy the tech with the kethane tank first. less than a second after buying it, kernel panic.
Third time, thinking this cannot possibly happen again, I loaded KSP, set it to windowed mode (to see if it was really a kernel panic or just that KSP was frozen and I couldn't get out of fullscreen) I unlocked the tech with the kethane tank and got a kernel panic within 1 second.
At this point I removed kethane and attempted to reproduce the problem in KSP alone, buying the same tech tree nodes, and letting KSP run a while just in case it really was a heat problem. Nothing happened.
Fourth time, I put Kethane back, loaded KSP and unlocked the kethane tank. then I unlocked the kethane scanner and got a kernel panic about 1 second later.
Fifth time, I went back to the science center, hovered over the kethane scanner part, and got a kernel panic.
KSP/KSP_Data/output_log.txt is not present in fact, the KSP_Data folder isn't there at all. I suspect this is a mac thing, so here is the KSP.log file https://gist.github.com/nhnifong/8018794
I'm running on Mac OSX 10.6.8 (two year old macbook pro) 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8Gb ram.
I know that you probably cannot fix this, but I thought you would like to know, because if this is actually just 5 coincidences, then perhaps the fabric of the universe is starting to collapse and entropy will start decreasing.
