settings_symbols_event.tmPreferences does not have the desired effect on Windows. I guess there should've been a tab?

Replacing \t with four spaces in the string for symbolTransformation worked for me.

It works fine on my Windows box. Which version, fontset and language or codepage do you use for Windows interfaces?

codepage not sure, where to I check that?

Anyway, since in some environment tab spacing looks like odd, I accepted your suggestion.
