Review and if possible update non-runtime dependencies, such as for the maven-release-plugin and sonatype-oss-parent-pom #327

Eg maven-release-plugin needs to be updated to 2.2.1 to support git in a good 
way...

This issue does not address runtime dependencies, e.g. mule and activemq 
dependencies.
