Check the README and the release notes. You need to stay on 3.x if you're using stable Rofi 1.7.x.
The 4.x branch is for the next version of Rofi, or the multitude of forks of Rofi that has appeared since Rofi hasn't had a new release in a few years and a lot of queued up changes.

I was about to update this to the latest version on Arch Linux, but then realized that it does not build:
