Blockchain setup uses too much data

8GB is just too much data to download for casual users. At the very least there 
should be a warning.

Agreed.

This will change as soon as bloom filtering is implemented. However, this will 
take some time as this extension of the protocol is still in the process of 
being specified and needs to be implemented into other clients as well.

This is fixed in version 2.41 (just released), as we now use bloom filtering.
