Makes significant changes and improvements to the species list tool. I've fixed the small suggestions from Walter and tidied up the code a little bit. The only outstanding issue this code leaves is that the S Kenya species list on the splash page doesn't generate the tab of images and I just can't figure out why. I don't think I understand the overall system well enough.

One more tweak. Maybe I don't need to keep doing this. Seems like it would be nice to have the whole batch of work in one pull request.
