is there a level shifting issue? 5V vs 3.3v? Can your external power supply provide enough power? or loose connections perhaps?
I tried using 4.5V, 6V, and 9V. but the shield didn't work.
How much power can it produce? The sim chip needs a lot of power.

I'm using Icomsat GSM Shield, it works perfectly fine if it's attached on arduino board. but it doesn't give correct respons if I use external power supply. what could be the problem?
