No MKV Thumbnails #6

After migrating from windows to my new Mac Pro, only one of the few things that's bothered me was the lack of native video support. This plugin is great (all I really needed was thumbnails, I really could care less about the QuickLook).

However, after installing and restarting Finder, to my sadness MKV is not supported. Are there plans to add support for this, or no?

This plugin is great, because I have thousands of MKV files and I'm just not in the mood to spend an entire week converting them.

-- On a side note, whoever reads this, what program is appropriate for converting MKV files into a native format on Mac, and which format is the best choice to ensure no loss of audio and video quality?

I have exactly the same issues! Reindexing also doesn't help...

First, please check that you downloaded and installed version 1.10.

Are you seeing thumbnails for other "non-native" media - e.g. .avi, .wmf, .rm etc?

To help diagnose the problem please run the Terminal app (in Applications -> Utilities) and type: qlmanage -m qlmanage -t -d1 /path/of/some/matroska/file.mkv then select all, copy, and paste the results here.

@Brian-Graham MKV is a container format, and a very nice one at that. Personally I would recommend you keep them that way. MplayerOSX Extended, MplayerX, MPV and VLC are all native mac programs that can view MKV files.

@Marginal I see thumbnails and quicklook previews for Webm's but none for MKV's. When I have an MKV selected in finder, I get Quicklooksatalite taking up over 300% of my CPU and my fans spinning full speed within a couple of seconds. This doesn't go away until if forcibly end the process via activity monitor. No quicklook previews nor thumbnails appear for any of the MKV's despite this.

@utterbull: Thanks. Please repeat the command: qlmanage -t -d1 /path/of/some/matroska/file.mkv but substitute the path of some Matroska file by dragging a file from the Finder and dropping it on the Terminal window.

@Marginal Yes, I did see a window with thumbnail when I run qlmanage -t -d1 <file>. However, when I press spacebar to launch quicklook, there is a loading spinner spinning for a little while then it turns into the usual filename and icon.

@utterbull: That doesn't look good since this plugin uses the same library and codecs as VLC. Can you get a copy of 720p10bit1Gb.mkv to me?

It's 1Gb in size, so no. I've tried with smaller MKV's (40Mb) with the same results.

Is there a way to turn off QLVideo for MKV's while leaving it on for WebM?

I tested with many mkv files. All with exactly the same result. Note that when, when I press spacebar (and loading spinner spin), QuickLookSatellite process spike and take a lot of CPU.

@utterbull: To prevent the plugin from attempting to thumbnail Matroska files edit /Library/QuickLook/Video.qlgenerator/Contents/Info.plist and remove the references to org.matroska.mkv, org.niltsh.mplayerx-matroska-video and indy.jt.niceplayer.mkv. Then, in the Terminal, type qlmanage -r .

@Marginal From my point of view, my problem is solved. QLVideo still makes thumbnails for WebM's (which is the reason I installed in the first place) and doesn't waste CPU on MKV thumbnails (which I don't really want anyway).

The problem I was having applied to all MKV files. Big, small, short, long they all caused the CPU spike and never received a thumbnail. I suspect the cause for this was the fact that I have so many video players installed at the same time (MplayerOSX Extended, MplayerX, MPV and VLC). In particular, MPV is installed via Homebrew, a terminal based package manager, which I use to regularly update both MPV and its multiple dependencies (ffmpeg, among others).

I thank you for your support in troubleshooting this problem. If you have any questions about my particular case that might assist you in any way, feel free to ask.

Should be fixed in release 1.20. You may need to restart Finder for the thumbnails to show up: ctrl-alt-click on the Finder dock icon and choose Relaunch.

@Brian-Graham: Sorry - hadn't noticed that the file extension is being grabbed by "Mac Blu-ray Player". Should be fixed in release 1.30.

Could you add supported players to the main page that this plugin properly generates thumbnails for MKV files?

@Brian-Graham Great. The plugin can co-exist with most media players. It's only a few that need special attention.
