If we want to pursue the idea of using 'elements', we need to not even try to make it chemically accurate, because I remember very little from Chemistry, and really it would just limit our options. But we can reuse element names, make up tons of our own elements, and use terminology from chemical reaction. Like orbital hybridization, electron affinity, reduction, isotopes. Things like that.
For them combining, if we want to go this route, I would encourage people to take a brief look at Element Tower Defense. It has a very interesting, complex, 'combination' system. https://www.eletd.com/towers
We 100% must have Unobtanium. Here is a list of fictional elements that could be inspirational in some ways: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_elements,_materials,_isotopes_and_subatomic_particles
As a complete team, we all need to sync up and talk about how the simulation might run.
Potential thought branches so far:
the life forms are elements, as in the periodic table elements, with which special properties can be defined. We can take advantage of Ionic charges and make future developments as in (rock paper scissors combat if we do player vs player concepts). - Fun part could be that we create brand new elements and name them thusly for fun purposes and define our own properties. (easy to expand upon, and honestly I could name my element marionium - cause that's fricken awesome.)
The life forms take scalar properties, like tier 1, 2, 3, a, b, c. Which could be introduced to unique properties. Like special "half-life" properies where they are volatile units that can either explode right away or have a semi-random time to live property within appropriate boundaries.
