Sub sites appear to have no documentation whatsoever #2518

Describe the bug and the steps to reproduce it

Searching for subsite on the user docs page doesn't turn up anything. In my code editor, references to an actual subsite only seem to take place during the tests. Did I miss something?

Expected behavior

Subsite behaviour and expectations should be documented. Even if requirements are not fully fleshed out?

True - Though we don't define "subsite" anywhere, or properties of subsites.

And I realise this didn't come up in my search because the term here is sub-site rather than subsite. Hmm. We should probably also standardise usage. Dashed is probably better.
