Types of contributors #11

Did a little thinking about contributor types. Here's a stab at classifying them. Figure this could help us understand who would produce what kind of content and how to recruit them.

Traditional Mozillian Contributors (who Scott has interacted with to date) Motivation: Believe in the mission, interested in technology. Passionate about localizing the experience to their language/country/region How recruited: Leverage existing methods of recruiting contributors

App enthusiasts/Marketplace evangelists (does this person exist???) Motivation: Passionate to share their expertise about apps and specific types of apps (photography/music) with others. How recruited: Find people in the Marketplace already contributing content like reviews.

Participants Motivation: Passionate about apps. Want to find apps in the marketplace and help others find apps. Would participate in activities like leaving reviews, upvoting contenting, sharing content, etc. How recruited: Newsletters, notifications, interesting content in the Marketplace they can engage with

OTHER Developers Motivation: promote their app Recruiting: Direct communication through emails, messages in developer hub. MDN.

It’s interesting that you’ve chosen to divide our contributor base this way. I think that there’s a lot of truth to it.

Your classification is helpful, because then we could say “If you’re a participant, here are things you can do”, “If you’re an existing Mozillians, here are things you can do”.

But for this project, let’s focus first and foremost on engaging Mozillians. They’re already with us, and they’re already engaged in one project or another (not necessarily Marketplace – although they can be technical reviewers). However, they already have the time and desire to contribute. How can we make them aware of editorial, and invite them to contribute editorially? What type of interesting stuff will we make available for them?

After we do that, we can identify and recruit existing users and participants. They’re not yet engaged with us, so it will be harder. But the recruiting base will be larger, too.

Also note: the discussion here will directly help solve issue #8: ways to recruit new users and engage existing contributors.
