This project should be archived. Google have released their own app. #3950

Given there has been zero response from the developers for a number of years, and this app has basically stopped working, I think it should be archived. It was great in its hey day but is now dead IMO. I've tried contacting the developer through a few channels, and he used to work at my company, but couldn't find a recent contact, or didn't get back to me.

The website to download the app is also dead: http://www.googleplaymusicdesktopplayer.com/

Google have now released a Chrome app for Youtube Music (along with nearly all of their other products) which is working well.

Happy listening everyone. 🎶

@steveswinsburg I'm not a fan of Chrome, so I don't know much about Chrome Apps (they had something like that before but IIRC they removed support for this from Chrome) and Googling for "Chrome app youtube music" and similar queries couldn't find anything official & useful. Most useful result is this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.youtube.music.pwa&hl=pl&gl=US but that's for Chromebooks only.

So... How do i get this app?

steveswinsburg commented 1 year ago

@dzek69 using Chrome, go to YouTube music in the browser, then there is a link to 'install' and it sets it up like any other app. There is nothing to download from the play store.

So it should be a PWA, but this is not showing up on my Chrome. You can still manually "create a shortcut" to the app, which basically does almost the same thing even for non-PWA apps, but this feature is available for years.

And it's still closer to just having a browser window with one tab than to this project, which added quite a lot stuff like Last.FM integration (you can achieve that with extensions), Discord presence, timers, global hotkeys, etc: https://github.com/MarshallOfSound/Google-Play-Music-Desktop-Player-UNOFFICIAL-#features

It should be possible to rewrite most of these as extension, but somebody has to do the work that's already done.

The project is dead, but it still works, at least for me

People may want to try https://ytmdesktop.app/ as a replacement desktop app.

ytm pwa requires chrome to be opened. it cant be opened alone as a standalone pwa . unlike safari, or edge. or other pwas or real apps alternative. so meh

OK, that's fair - in my excitement(?) to find a new YTM app, I failed to notice it was just a Chrome app.

Edit: Just loaded it again (having confused it with the standard YTM PWA first time!) and it just crashed with a nasty error in Electron, so...

The GitHub repo has disappeared too :(

Hahaha, boy do I feel you.google are such a pain in the ass with their refusal to make proper apps. I used to love keep but it doesn't work offline and these fuckers didn't implement caching for the web app 💀

Yeah....there is a ytm app though , from other projects ! (several alternatives actually) . I'll send the links to you when I get ahold of my laptop
