Fixes based on bob feedback #27

Thanks for the previous suggestions.

I got myself in a bit of a mess with git commits, so apologies they are a lot of them and they are a bit mixed up.

I have made your suggested changes and updated my tests based on changes made to channels.py.

I will now work on adding tests for the mixin class and look into at least a basic smoke test for plots.
