This issue is for collecting ideas how a web service for for collaborative generation and quality assessment of educational material could be like. Feel free to add comments.
Why did you start this project? What is wiki-ed?
It feels to me that the quality of the available educational material is not as good as it could / should be. I want to make it easier to share educational material. I want that people who create nice things can easily get credit for it and that those good materials can be used by others easily.
This project is an attempt to fix it.
Why should students use wiki-ed?
You can easily search for new stuff you need.
You can say what you really want to know and find all other requirements as well as good material to get those requirements as fast as possible - no need to click from one Wikipedia page to 1000 other pages.
FA1 - Content Upload: People should be able to upload arbitrary stuff (especially PDFs, probably also LaTeX which gets automatically compiled, images). One could probably use commons.wikimedia.org for the hosting.
FA2 - Description: There should be a possibility to describe the content, tag it.
FA3 - Dependencies: It should be possible to mark dependencies. Dependencies should be about content, which should be independent of the lecturer. For example, the dependency could be a list of vocabulary which the student has to know (cross-entropy, matrix multiplication, convolution, theorem of XYZ, ...) - I'm not sure if this would always imply how to do it.
FA4 - Content Description: It should be possible to mark the content with what it teaches. This way, students could take the keywords they have to know and look for courses which teach those keywords.
Tags
Types of tags are:
Language tags (English, German, French, ...)
Field / subject tags (Computer science, Chemistry, Mathematics, ...)
Those tags should probably have a hierarchy (e.g. mathematics/algebra, mathematics/numerics, ...)
Functionality for other authors / students
FU1 - search: With the description and the tags, it should be possible to search for it.
FU2 - comment: People should be able to make comments (those comments should probably be divided into suggestions for improvement and questions about the content)
Quality assessment
FQ1 - Gamification: There should be a StackExchange like privilege / reward system to prevent bad content / comments. → people need to register for much of the functionality. However, it should be possible to download material even if one isn't logged in.
FQ2 - Identification: People should have the possibility to make them identifiable (e.g. post a link to their profile on their university website which gets automatically checked or receiving a code to an .edu e-mail address).
