Electric for lights and slide show #62

Went to Lee Hartman and sons in Roanoke today. They recommended a tv, because a projector and screen requires more space (screen should be about 13 ft from projector). The Tv comes in a big travel box which you can use as the table to put it on. Prices for one day (he said we could pick up on Friday and return on Monday, if we promised to use it only one day)... 32" TV - $85 (95 watts) 47" TV - $165 (130 watts) 60" TV - $200 (170 watts) Projector - $100, screen $25 (280 watts?, we forgot to ask so we looked on the net)

Called CVR. Each 24 ft string of globe lights has 6 bulbs (40 watts each or 240 watts per string) You reserved 8 strings. That would be 240x8=1,920 watts.

If we need to go 250 ft and we rent their nice heavy 10 gauge extension cord, David calculated that we should load it with no more than 1,200 watts. So we either need to run 2 extension cords or reduce the number of watts for lighting. We recommend the latter.

Some possible solutions Use 4 strings of lights instead of 8 Replace some of the 40 watt incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs that are as bright or brighter and use only 10 watts Run some LED rope (60 ft = 50 watts)

DavidPBiddle commented 9 years ago

Did a little research and found two possible lighting options.

First of all CVR lighting comes in 24 foot strands each with 6 60 W incandescent bulbs. 6 strands will use 2160 watts. After adding an additional 320 watts for the TV and the amplifiers we get the total of 2480 watts. This is more watts than two 10 gauge extension cords running 250 feet can support. 10 gauge is the largest size cord I can find to rent.

Option 1: We can bring the wattage down to an acceptable level of 1289 by replacing 26 of the 60 watt bulbs with 6.5 watt LED bulbs Each LED bulb would provide light equivalent to a 40 watt bulb.

Option 2: Don't rent the CVR lighting system. Instead purchase 300 feet LED rope lights and set them up ourselves. These would bring the wattage down to 560 and allow us to use 12 gauge extension cords.

The cost breaks down like this.

Using CVR system and 26 LED bulbs $130 - LED Bulbs $157 - Light Rental $100 - 2 250 foot 10 gauge extension cords $388 - Total

Using the LED ropes $236 - 2 150 ft rolls of LED rope equipped with a plug $36 - 2 250 ft 12 gauge extension cords $272 - Total

The only concern we have is whether these two LED ropes will provide enough light. The company we would purchase from offers an 30 day trial period. We thought we would buy them and try them out one night. If they work and you like the idea then we would keep them.

dwightbiddle commented 9 years ago

Is the company local? I'd rather try what they provide us with, and then take half the lights out and see what it looks like. If none of that works, then we could get the LED lights if the company is local.

What do you think?

If you want to use the Globe lighting provided by CVR, I would like to get the wattage down so that I can avoid using the heavier 10 gauge extension cord that would cost $100 and would require a trip to Roanoke to pick up. Here is how I would get the wattage down. You would rent 6 strands of lights not the 8 strands that are now on order with CVR. We would buy 36 LED bulbs for $234 from Lowes now. (We would get 18 equivalent to a 40 Watt bulb and 18 equivalent to a 60 Watt bulb.) After the wedding we would share the bulbs and split the cost. The total cost for this option is $417 (including CVRs cost for the 6 strands of lights). The price has increased from the previous estimate because we are replacing all the incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs so we can use the simpler and cheaper ($25) 12 gauge extension cord. Plus we end up with a bunch of LED bulbs to put in our houses.

If you want to use the LED rope option, we would have to buy them soon to give us time to test and determine if they will provide enough light. The total cost for this option would be $272.

sallyhutch commented 9 years ago

We can use four cords as you suggested if we replace only half of the bulbs with LEDs. We will buy and all the LED bulbs. (If you are interested in some of them we can work that out after the wedding.) Your rental for the extension cords would be about $80.

sallyhutch commented 9 years ago

We are taking "find patch cords" off our list of things to do, because we figure it is between you and Russ to supply what is needed. So now you can put it on your list :)

dwightbiddle commented 9 years ago

Yes, I will take care of all of the audio with the help of Russ.

How many light bulbs would it take to replace half the bulbs in those strands? They are pretty expensive right, like $6 a pop?

6 strands x 3 bulbs x ~$7.50 = $135 (The price is for the 60 watt equivalent LED, which seemed more practical than 40 for use later) We don't mind keeping all 18 LED bulbs, we will use them, and we've been wanting to try them out anyway. If you want some of them, we will share.

dwightbiddle commented 9 years ago

OK, we can figure out who keeps them later, I think thats a good solution. You can close this once you've bought the bulbs.

Reserved 6 100 foot extension cords and 6 50 foot extension cords to be delivered with the tent by CVR.

dwightbiddle commented 9 years ago

Wow! Thats a lot of extension cords. I will get back to you on the wattage of the television tonight. The average wattage for a 46" LCD TV is between 70 and 120 though. Seems pretty negligible.

Should this be closed? I think we have figured everything out we can ahead of time, and just need to put it all together.

Did you guys actually buy the bulbs already?

DavidPBiddle commented 9 years ago

Yes we bought the bulbs. And yes we have a plan.
